This intermediate-level lab explores how Acquisition Widgets and Automations work together. Before starting, you should know what an Acquisition Widget is, where to set one up, and what automation triggers and steps are.
Step 1: Discover the hidden power of the Acquisition Widget (3 min)
Read
You might already be familiar with basic automations and have used an Acquisition Widget to capture new leads on your website. What some may not realize is the hidden power inside an Acquisition Widget — it can do many things an automation can do without any special configuration steps.
What Acquisition Widgets can automate
When a new account is created from an Acquisition Widget, that widget can automatically:
- Activate freemium products — Turn on free or trial products for the new lead
- Start an email campaign — Trigger a nurture or onboarding sequence
- Add tags to the account — Categorize and segment for follow-up
- Assign a salesperson — Route the lead to the right rep
No special configuration required
The Acquisition Widget handles these actions out of the box. You don't need to build a separate automation for basic lead capture and activation — the widget does it for you.
A vendor embeds an Acquisition Widget on their landing page. When a reseller signs up, the widget automatically activates a 7-day Reputation Management trial, adds the tag "Landing Page Lead," starts a 5-email onboarding sequence, and assigns the lead to the regional sales rep. All of this happens without a single automation — just widget configuration.
Step 2: Connect widgets to automations (3 min)
Read
The Acquisition Widget does a lot on its own — but there are powerful actions that Automations can take to improve your workflows even more.
Supercharge your efficiency
What if you could connect your Acquisition Widget to an Automation? Automations can take additional actions that go beyond what the widget does natively — complex sequences, conditional logic, integrations, and multi-step workflows. Connecting them supercharges your agency's efficiency.
When to use both
Use the Acquisition Widget for: lead capture, immediate activation of freemium products, basic tagging, and assignment.
Use Automations for: follow-up sequences, conditional branching, integrations with CRM or other tools, and advanced workflows that respond to triggers over time.
Step 3: Create an Acquisition Widget (4 min)
Do
Create an Acquisition Widget that can be used in Automations. Know where to set one up and how to configure it for maximum impact.
Prerequisites
Before creating a widget, you should know:
- What is an Acquisition Widget? — A tool that captures leads on your website and can trigger actions when a new account is created.
- Where do I set one up? — In the platform's Acquisition or Widget configuration area.
- What actions can it take? — Activate products, start campaigns, add tags, assign salespeople.
Configuration
Configure your widget to capture the right information, activate the right products, and — when connected to an Automation — trigger the right workflow. A well-configured widget is the first step in a streamlined lead-to-customer journey.
Step 4: Build basic to advanced automations (5 min)
Do
Automations use triggers and steps to run workflows automatically. Start with the basics, then explore advanced options to handle more complex scenarios.
Triggers and steps
- Triggers — What starts the automation (e.g., new account created, form submitted, tag added)
- Steps — What the automation does (e.g., send email, add tag, assign owner, wait X days)
Understanding triggers and steps is the foundation for building effective automations.
Basic automations
Set up a basic automation to make your workflows easier. Example: when a new account is created from an Acquisition Widget, add a tag, send a welcome email, and assign to a salesperson. Simple, repeatable, and time-saving.
Advanced automations
Get a peek into more advanced automations: conditional logic (if/else), multi-step sequences, wait steps, integrations, and branching. These supercharge your efficiency by handling complex scenarios without manual intervention.
